About the Area

Stamford, deeded in 1640, is the fourth-largest city in the state of CT, and the eighth largest throughout New England. Originally known as Rippowam by its early Native American inhabitants, the name was later changed to Stamford, after a town in England. By the Eighteenth century, one of the primary industries of the town was merchandising by water, which was possible due to Stamford's proximity to New York.

New York residents built summer homes on the shoreline, starting in the late 19th century, and even back then there were some who moved to Stamford permanently and started commuting to Manhattan by train. This practice became even more popular in later years, however.

Today, Brewer Yacht Haven Marina is a convenient and popular homeport for New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey boaters. Situated in close proximity to many well-known yacht clubs, Brewer Yacht Haven also serves as a hub for major sailboat racing on Long Island Sound. For those desiring a convenient port for cruising, some popular weekend destinations include Oyster Bay, Northport, the Norwalk Islands, and Port Jefferson. The Long Island Forks, Block Island, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket are also favorite destinations for boaters based here.
