ANNUAL APPRECIATION BARBEQUE 09/13/2008
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 2008
Brewer Plymouth Marine held
A PIRATES GATHERING AT
HIGH NOON
PIRATES COVE # 2

THE BEST COSTUME RECEIVED
A
TREASURE CHEST OF LOBSTERS

The Brewer Team arrived with eyes covered over by black patches, swords hung from their sides, bandanas covered balding heads. Lisa from our dock office coordinated the event and wore a full pirate costume.

The customers joined in the fun with a variety of the same except for our prize winning O'Brien girls. They were the cutest pirates we had ever seen but very authentic.

And then, up pulled The Black Pearl with a pirate flag and an old pier dangling from her stern.
Her Captain stood six foot four with a hefty girth. His silver moss receding eyes rolled like the ocean on his blackened face. An intimidating smile stretched across his face as he tilted his head and searched the horizon for bounty. Tim and Dave cooked for us and kept a careful eye on our young pirates as our strange Pirate strolled about. He never seemed to get his fill of burgers, dogs, salads, homemade pirate cookies and especially refreshments.

As the sun set over the docks and the dozens of lobsters in the treasure chest were given to Caitlin O'Brien we held one lobster for our pirate to assure he sailed off and left us alone.

Next year we will pick another theme.

Unwrapping and Recycling Shrinkwrap 04/03/2007
Steps to take Shrinkwrap off of your boat.

1.Cut the wrap from the boat
2.Cut out (and throw away) anything that's not shrinkwrap
*Rope
*Belly Bands
*Zippers
*Vents

IF IT DOESN'T LOOK AND FEEL LIKE SHRINKWRAP, IT'S NOT SHRINKWRAP

3.Cut the wrap into manageable pieces
4.Keep the wrap as clean as possible (don't drag it through water or mud)
5.Both blue and white wrap can be recycled. Put the different colors in different bags. (Clear shrinkwrap can or regular clear plastic can be mixed with white or blue shrinkwrap.)
6.Stuff the wrap into the bag
*THERE'S NO WEIGHT LIMIT, BUT YOU HAVE TO LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM SO THE BAG CAN BE TIED OFF OR SEALED SECURLEY.
7.Tie/Seal the bag with a soft plastic tie or shrinkwrap tape
8.Set the bag out in a designated location to be picked up

Questions:

1.Ask marina staff
2.Contact Mark Lennon (603-229-1962) or Paul Caccia (RI Resource Recovery Corp., 401-942-1430 x115)

A proposal to institute a tax on slips and moorings at marinas! 03/16/2007
Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce

ISSUE OF CONCERN

You may not be aware but there is a group calling itself “The Campaign for Rhode Island's Priorities” (comprised of a wide ranging group of interests from social service agencies to labor unions) that has suggested a series of measures designed to produce $100 million in revenue for the state as the Fiscal Year 2008 State Budget is constructed. Most of the measures require legislation, and several bills have already been introduced on the group's behalf.

One of the measures that has been suggested (but requires legislation) is a proposal to institute a tax on slips and moorings at marinas. This proposal may be an effort to add slip and mooring rentals to the list of what the state sales tax can apply to. However, it may also be a proposal to institute a separate (non service) tax on slips and moorings. Further, there may be a proposal to require cities and towns to assess local property tax on marinas, etc, and to enforce collection. As you know, this is not a common practice in Rhode Island. In the legislative session of 1993, legislation reversing many of the tax and economic development benefits granted the boat building industry in the state, became law. Within a few years that original legislation was reinstated, after the boat building industry suffered and the state lost revenue created through boat building and manufacturing jobs.

The Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce Coalition (the Central Rhode Island Chamber is a partner) believes that it would be shortsighted to institute the above proposals, as the underlying [entities] provide unique economic development in our state. We will be strongly opposing this legislation. We may need marina and boat owners to share their thoughts with the legislative committee if a hearing is scheduled. If you are willing to attend please let me know. We need to keep this industry as a vital component to the economic well being of the state. Please feel free to share your thoughts via email on this important issue. Thank you.

Tech Tips from Brewer Cove Haven Marina 02/21/2007
During the winter it is very important to check your boat frequently. Rain and Snow water have a way of finding its way into your bilge. Often the bilge gets so full that woodwork or machinery is damaged. You may want to install a "garboard" plug in the lowest point in the hull.
The plug can be removed during the winter and will permit the bilge water to drain out. We have installed dozens of these hull plugs and have prevented many boats from "sinking" on land.

RI State Law now requires that your boat be inspected for compliance with the no discharge law. Each boat will have a sticker issued by the inspection station. The inspection, which can be done by Brewer Cove Haven Marina, will determine whether you have the correct holding tank set up or if you have no capacity to discharge sewage into the waters of the state. Harbormasters will check for stickers and enforce the law accordingly. Give us a call if you want to have your boat inspected.

In recent years attention has been drawn to boating fatalities related to Carbon Monoxide poisoning on boats with engines or generators running. Most of the accidents involved boats with enclosures where the fumes were able to draft into the living spaces. CO as a gas is odor free and invisible. The solution today is easier than it has been because of the availability of CO Detectors. The new generation of Co detectors can be wired directly into the DC electrical system, which permits it to operate all of the time that the boat is in use. You can read about the issue in the December 2005 Practical Sailor.

As many of you have read recently, the shrink wrap recycling program is a great success. Last year alone, over 46,000 pounds of shrink wrap was collected from Brewer Cove Haven Marina and other marinas around the state. All of it was recycled! The program works like this; if you have had your boat shrink-wrapped, either have the staff remove or if you wish to remove it yourself, you should pick up the recycle bags at the BCHM store, remove the plastic, take off all ties, doors and other non plastic debris, place in a recycle bag and bring to the north side of the building #2. It will be picked up on a twice a week schedule or as needed. DO NOT THROW SHRINK WRAP IN THE DUMPSTER!!!

I was able to email this information to the entire BFB contact list and as a result many of you were informed and able to prepare accordingly. Marina News 03/11/2008
We at Brewer Wickford Cove Marina have had a busy winter and are looking forward to a great 2008 summer season. The BWCM dredging project is completed for this winter. Digging is completed on the eastern half of the marina with a resulting draft of 10 feet available at mean low tide. We will finish the western half next winter. The eastern side of the service dock is now open for business with a 50'+ wide channel to the head of the stream next to the lift slip. We are calling it the "mega dock" because it offers over 300 feet of alongside docking.
We are planning to add a 200 amp three-phase electrical service to the mega dock so that larger yachts over 100 feet can visit the marina. Plans are also afoot to move the service/mega dock gangway from the end of the liftslip walkway to a new landing east of the slipway onto a new 96' dock connected to the inboard end of the service dock. New overhead lights will be installed soon at the head of each dock with some electrical supply improvements expected later this summer. The new high-tech septic system is in the approval process and will hopefully be installed this summer. We hope to see you at the marina as soon as the weather begins to warm up.
