Founded in 1638, Portsmouth is said to be the first town in the nation established by a woman (Anne Hutchinson), and, according to many, is America's first true democracy. The Portsmouth Compact of 1638 marks the first authentic guarantee of civil and religious freedom in the New World.
Encompassing almost 60 square miles, Portsmouth is comprised of more water than land. Surrounded by the Ocean State's proud marine heritage, Brewer Sakonnet Marina is in the heart of it all. Nearby Newport is famous for America's Cup sailing, the Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and the Museum of Yachting. The town of Portsmouth is also home to many renowned yacht builders, while four of the state's top five boat dealers are located in town.
