| Bow Thruster Installations |
A SidePower SP-95 bow thruster on a 44' Mason was among the first installed by Brewer South Freeport Marine. With this addition, the owners have found maneuvering in and out of slips much easier.
"We selected one of the largest units recommended for a boat of this size," says mechanic, Bobby Hall. "With the heavy displacement, the full keel, and the length of this boat, we wanted to be sure we were providing more than adequate power."
Using a special jig, designed for cutting holes for bow thruster tubes, each side of the hull was drilled out, well below the waterline. "We placed the unit as far forward as possible, to maximize its effectiveness," Bobby explains. "It fits neatly between the inverter and the battery installations we did last year, and makes good use of the limited space available under the v-berth."
Head Painter, Jim Cote, assisted Bobby with the project, laying up fiberglass to secure the tube in its proper place.
"We're excited," say owners Dick and Marty Traiser. "We did a lot of research and talked to other Mason owners who had already installed this unit, on this same boat, before starting the project. It's the right thruster for the boat."
A factory-installed hydraulic bow thruster was also repowered on a 40-foot Down East cruiser, after the owner determined that his hydraulic unit wasn't producing enough thrust to maneuver the boat.
"To correct the problem in a cost effective manner, I researched and electric conversion, changed out the motor, ran new cabling and switching, and installed over-current protection," Bobby explains. "The original bow thruster wasn't compatible with the hydraulic system it was previously powered by, but this conversion will power the thruster to the boat owner's satisfaction." |

| Sailboat and power boat owners are finding that the addition of a bow thruster greatly reduces the stress of docking, especially when arriving and departing slips in a swift current or stiff breeze. Ask us for a quote! A thruster may be worth your investment. |
