Dredging to the Westbrook Channel has been passed!

The dredging of the entrance channel into the Westbrook Harbor is scheduled to begin April 2nd and is expected to be completed by the end of April.

One of the basins at Pilots Point gets dredged. The area to be dredged will be approximately 750’ long, 120’ wide and 8’+ deep (MLW), which will clear out the shallow spots from inside the stone jetty out to the “R2” entrance buoy. The material dredged will be pumped over to Grove Beach, to help restore the beach running west of the stone jetty.

The US Army Corps of Engineer’s estimate for performing the necessary maintenance dredging of the Patchogue River channel for this year was $1.6 million. The COE could not get the federal funds allocated for this effort. As a result, the Town of Westbrook will be stepping in, for the third time, to emergency dredge the channel to keep it open so the harbor can function.

Although the channel will be dredged for the convenience and enjoyment of boaters, it is still important for boaters to use good judgment when navigating the channel. Boaters should always stay to the right side of the channel, and give way to larger boats with deep keels that must stay closer to the middle of the channel.
