Since the late 1600s, Essex has been a small town whose primary business is the marine trades. In that sense, nothing has really changed in 300 years. The first warship owned by the United States - the 24-gun Oliver Cromwell - was built in Essex. Years later, the British raided Essex during the War of 1812. History is everywhere in Essex, which is one reason why it's such a great cruising destination or home port for your boat - there's so much to see and do in and around town. Many of the town's early buildings are still in active use, and marine-related storefronts are everywhere. In Essex, the past and the present merge.
Brewer Dauntless Shipyard is at the heart of the marine community. It is a small but very active and capable marina & boatyard. Slips are available for boats up to 100 feet. The year round service staff are capable of your maintenance needs as well as cosmetic and technical upgrades.
On the property are also several brokers of new and used boats, carrying top lines such as Grand Banks, Sabre, Sabreline, Nonsuch, and Hallbery-Rassey. A marine survey company is also located on the premises. A great eatery, called Crow's Nest Deli, overlooks the river, serving breakfast, lunch, and weekend dinners on an outdoor deck.
