Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous 07/24/2010
July 24-25, 2010
Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Downriver Parade, Sunday at 12:45 p.m.
Come to Mystic Seaport for a gathering of classic vehicles just like any other, except this one happens to take place on the water!

The Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous is a dazzling display of high-quality antique vessels built before 1965, including cruisers, sailboats, runabouts, launches and more. An award competition recognizes excellence in restoration, authenticity and workmanship.

Dressed and in pristine condition, approximately 40 classic vessels create a colorful gathering along the Museums waterfront all day Saturday and Sunday morning for your viewing pleasure. Sunday at 12:45 p.m., watch as the vessels make their way down the Mystic River in a jubilant, costume- and music-filled three-mile parade.

In 2009, we featured Little Vigilant, a vessel designed for Drayton Cochran and built by Abeking and Rasmussen in 1950. During this time, Mr. Cochran brought the Concordia plans to A&R beginning a long standing relationship between the two organizations resulting in the construction of more than 100 Concordia Yawls.

The 70' Little Vigilant was based on a larger vessel, Vigilant, a 100' sardine carrier style boat built in the 1930s. She was designed by Walter McGinnis to be able to navigate the inland waterways of Europe, and has a fold down rig and removable wheelhouse to enable this. Mr. Cochran used her for 6-8 weeks each summer in European waters, traveling as far as the East coast of Africa and the Baltic. She recently underwent an extensive rebuild and now operates out of New Bedford, MA.

Brewer Mystic a Connecticut Clean Marina 02/04/2010
Here in Mystic we have been designated as a State of Connecticut Clean Marina. There is a lot involved in becoming a clean marina and it has been an ongoing effort for several years. This in and of itself is not a simple task. Some of the things involved are Storm Water Discharge Permits, pressure wash water waste managemetn, hazardous waste management, manifests and recycling all play a roll in the process. We are proud of the way we take care of our marina and we hope and expect that you too will embrace these efforts.
Conservation:
Conservation is something we all must practice and there are many ways we can do it around the yard. For example, please dispose of trash and recyclables in the proper dumpsters. The dumpsters are maked appropriately, there are three for trash and one each for cardboard and bottles and cans. Waste oil should also be disposed of properly, not in the trash dumpsters but in the Waste Oil recycling bin. Please feel free to ask if you are not sure where something should be disposed of.Please don't leave your air conditioners on if you are not going to be on the boat. If you are leaving after the weekend and will not be back until Friday please feel free to give us a call and we will put you air conditioner on before you arrive at no charge. Don't forget to turn off the lights! Water is another precious commodity so please do not leave the water running if you don't have to.

Working together we can become a 'Clean Marina' in more ways than one!

Clean Boat Yard & Marina 05/10/2010
This winter, Brewer South Freeport Marine was recognized by the Maine Marine Trades Association and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection when the yard was formally named a "Clean Boat Yard & Marina" under a State sponsored environmental program. Awards and accolades were presented at an informal riverside ceremony on 4/16/10.

Courtesy Wi-Fi 05/10/2010
Courtesy Wi-Fi cards for Brewer Yacht Yard Club members have arrived! If you'd like wireless access from your boat, please pick up your 2010 Wi-Fi card in the Ship's Store. Last season's cards and passwords are now expired.

PARKING 02/04/2010
PLEASE NOTE: cars blocking tractor/trailer and travellift access to boats greatly delays boat yard service and launching activity. Moving cars with a forklift, or calling in tow truck services, is something we prefer to avoid. Please help us expedite our service work by leaving your car keys on file in the Ship's Store, or inside your unlocked vehicle. And make sure a current parking pass or permit is in your front windshield at all times. Thank you for your cooperation.

SPRING UNCOVERING TIPS 02/04/2010
Please note: Brewer South Freeport Marine prefers to handle the removal of all SHRINKWRAP covers from boats. This helps ensure that all material is properly packaged for recycling. The company that recycles our shrinkwrap film has strict rules for packaging procedures. If you wish to remove your own shrinkwrap cover, we ask that you PLEASE contact John, in the yard office, for instructions, and/or refer to the following list:

SHRINKWRAP REMOVAL FOR PROPER DISPOSAL
1. Remove all foam blocks and place in garbage bag for use next season. Store in Bay 3, under the stairs.
2. Remove the shrinkwrap door. If it is not damaged, remove the tape, roll it up and tie it. Store in Bay 3 for use next season.
3. Carefully cut away the belly band from the shrink wrap. Disposed of in dumpster, along with all nylon banding used to secure the cover. This is non-recyclable material.
4. While still on the frame, cut the shrinkwrap cover into 2-3 manageable sections. Roll and fold, and tie with scraps of removed nylon banding. Set these bundles in front of the Main Building, next to the dumpster.
5. Remove wood strapping and dispose of screws. Please do NOT drop screws in the yard! (Car and yard equipment tire punctures are a concern).
6. Take home short wood strapping for kindling, or cut into smaller sections and dispose of in dumpster.
7. Long strapping, with no knots, gets saved for next season, once all screws have been removed.
8. Save all 2x4 uprights.
9. All saved wood should be tied in manageable bundles and set in designated areas in yard. If you have any questions, please check in at the yard office.

If you have a FAIRCLOUGH FITTED CANVAS COVER on your boat, there is a proper way to fold the cover upon removal. Proper folding will allow for easy installation in the fall. If you wish to remove your own canvas cover, please contact John in the yard office for guidance.

BYY Preferred Customer Club Cards 02/04/2010
As a customer of Brewer Yacht Yards, you are entitled to the unique benefits of the Preferred Customer Club Card. GREEN cards are issued to single-season customers; GOLD cards are issued to year-round customers. Both cards offer discounted dockage at BYY sister ports and fuel discounts at all BYY locations. To take advantage of these benefits, pick up your card in the Ship's Store in the spring.

Fuel 02/04/2010
Remember, your BYY Preferred Customer Club Card affords you 10 and 20 cents off the gallon for GREEN and GOLD cards, respectively. Cards must be shown at the time of purchase. Note: fuel cannot be charged to house accounts. Cash, check, or credit card payments are required.

CLEAN MARINA & BOAT YARD 02/04/2010
We have recently completed an extensive Clean Marina & Boat Yard certification process, after working closely with members of the Maine Marine Trades Association, the Maine DEP, and our own environmental consultants. Look for word of our official Clean Marina & Boat Yard status to be in the news this spring. Also look for new signage and contract language, and a reorganized and greatly improved hazardous and non-hazardous waste containment area.

Please help us maintain our pledge to protect our surrounding marine environment. Follow proper disposal etiquette; choose biodegradable and non-toxic cleaners; and use dustless sanders and drop cloths to contain work site debris. All do-it-yourself work must be pre-approved by yard management. If you have questions, please ask!

Yard Rules - Speeding and pool Rules 02/23/2009
Please be courteous to our patrons and staff. The yard speed limit is 10 mph on land and 5 mph on the water.

Speeds in the yard should be kept to a minimum due to pedestrian traffic, children at play , and heavy equipment traffic. Reduced speeds will also help keep the dust down in the yard. Speed bumps are being installed on the entrance drive to help deter any speeding. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

We love our doggie customers, but we must insist that there are no pets in the pool area or in the pool.
As always, please do not leave your children unattended by the pool, as there is NO lifeguard on duty.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: MARINA EDITION...BUILDING FOR RENT! 01/26/2010
The old Mast Shed Building at Brewer Wickford has undergone an extreme makeover in the past few months. No Ty Pennington, no volunteers, no "move that bus". Instead, marina staff and local contractors have come together to totally refurbish the historic structure inside and out. The process began with reinsulation and flooring of the 2000 SF main building. The bathroom was remodeled, new ceiling tiles installed, interior walls painted and all new outside trim, window frames and exterior shingles added. The two apartments at the building's south end have been totally redecorated inside and out.
The two apartments are currently occupied but we are still looking for a business to rent all or part of the mast shed. This is a GORGEOUS WATERFRONT PROPERTY which we will finish to suit prospective renters. Please drop by and have a look.

SLIPS AVAILABLE FOR 2010 01/25/2010
Tired of the run all the way down the bay from Providence? Tired of crushing traffic and astronomical dockage rates in Newport and Jamestown? Wouldn't you rather keep your boat in a peaceful and quaint 1600's fishing village full of tasteful shops, gourmet restaurants and the largest collection of original colonial buildings in the United States? Factor in Brewer Wickford's hurricane hole status, nearby town beach, short ride to the airport and pastoral country surroundings and you will find that we are in a class by ourselves.
After decades of no vacancies, slips for most sizes of vessels are now available at Brewer Wickford Cove Marina. Please stop by or give us a call to reserve your slip before they are all gone. We look forward to including you in our Brewer Family.

BREWER YACHT SALES AT WICKFORD 01/24/2010
David McKenney is the broker at Brewer Wickford Cove Marina. Both Dave and the yard work for the same person....you the customer. There are several serious buyers looking for boats. We have just sold a Sabre 38, a Rampage 31 and a custom 40' sailboat. Activity is increasing steadily as we have recent offers on a 31' Downeast lobsteryacht, a nice 27' Boston Whaler center console and a beautiful C&C 38 sloop. Other nice vessels currently for sale at Brewer Wickford include a spotless Selene 36, a classic Block Island 40, a gorgeous Bluestar 36, a sturdy Fortier 33 and a beautiful Arundel 27.
It may still be a buyer's market but there is solid activity. This is a good time to purchase a boat and if you need to sell, the market is warming up nicely.
