TECH TIPS FROM OUR SHOP 06/06/2005
HOW ARE YOUR BATTERIES?

Most battereis in marine service are old at 3 years. The larger batteries are OK usually up to 4 years. Whenever batteries run down below %50 charge, damage occurs. If you suspect battery problems we can test them fairly easily.

YOUR HOSES AND CLAMPING

A thorough check of all your hoses and clamps, especially those below the water line is always a good idea. If you boat is equipped with the white plastic type that are popular in many new boats you should be especially careful; uv damage weakens them and they can fail. Many hoses become brittle as well; we often find hoses below the water line that are on the verge of causing total loss of a vessel.

DECK FILLS

Keep in mind that most deck fills rely on soft pliable "O" rings to seal out the weather. Check to make sure that all your seals are in order to prevent contamination of your fuel or potable water.

BREWER YACHT HAVEN WELCOMES GF MACHINE AND MARINE FABRICATION 11/05/2004
Brewer Yacht Haven Marina welcomes GF Machine and Marine Fabrication to the old Maritech building, just adjacent to the guard shack near the entrance to our yard. GF machine (formerly Taff machine of Stamford) ran a small three man precision machine shop across the river. We found ourselves using their services to help our efficiency and capability several times a week. When it was announced that they were planning on moving to Bridgeport, BYH stepped in and made painstaking arrangements to take them in. The owner, Gregory Futyma, along with his two co-workers are originally from Poland and began their machining careers 25 years ago building custom busses for Mercedes Benz.

In short, they have the capabilty to fabricate anything a boat could need, and speed the efficiency of our service. If you have anything in mind that you would like built stop in and see us. We are now turning out pulpits, radar towers, t-tops, custom shafts, virtually anything under the sun.

Winter Service 12/06/2007
We're headed into the dark days of winter, so file your service requests soon. Even in the coldest months, our technicians keep a very busy schedule! Work orders should be placed ASAP, so boats are ready for launching come spring.

If you're tackling a large project, meet with John, our Yard Manager, to formulate a plan. If no major projects are on your list this year, consider addressing the basics:

Do your winches need servicing? Are your fire extinguishers up to date? Are your bilge pumps in working order? Has your running and standing rigging been inspected? Does your windlass function properly? Does your deck hardware need to be rebedded? Does the protective finish on your boat need to be rebuilt? Has your super-structure been buffed and waxed recently? Is it time to reapply varnish?

Please contact us with questions. Don't delay; winter passes more quickly than you think!

Service Updates 09/20/2005
We are still in the process of upgrading our docks with state of the art Radisson Design Floating Docks. Docks E-K have been completed and this winter we will replace Dock D.

This past year we upgraded the electrical service to the original part of the yard with a new 1200 amp service. This feeds docks A-E and the storage/office building.

The various service departments have been busy with numerous projects. We’ve upgraded many boats with new electronics. Several boats required both structural and cosmetic repairs by our “glass” dept. We replaced the carpeting in a Sea Ray with a Teak and Holly sole. The Cabo Rico sailboat that received the new teak deck last winter had us install a Lewmar windlass and modify the anchor locker to receive 300’ of chain. The Mechanics have been very successful keeping up with all of your service requests. The Paint dept. has maintained lots of bright work this season and is in the process of painting a couple of hulls.

This season we hired Compass Security to keep an eye on our facility during the evening hours. We will continue to make improvements in this area of concern.

Despite rising fuel costs our dock staff has been busy. We did our best after the hurricane to keep our fuel increases to a minimum- We sold out over the spectacular Labor Day weekend.

Winter Storage & Summer Slips 09/20/2005
We have mailed the 05-06 Winter Storage and Summer Slip Agreements. This year we are offering our year round customers a 5% discount on their summer slips. We have also kept our 05-06 winter storage rates the same as last year.

Yard Rules - Speeding 05/08/2004
Please be courteous to our patrons and staff. The yard speed limit is 10 mph on land and 5 mph on the water. Speeds in the yard should be kept to a minimum due to pedestrian traffic, children at play , and heavy equipment traffic. Reduced speeds will also help keep the dust down in the yard. Speed bumps are being installed on the entrance drive to help deter any speeding. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

A proposal to institute a tax on slips and moorings at marinas! 03/16/2007
Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce

ISSUE OF CONCERN

You may not be aware but there is a group calling itself “The Campaign for Rhode Island's Priorities” (comprised of a wide ranging group of interests from social service agencies to labor unions) that has suggested a series of measures designed to produce $100 million in revenue for the state as the Fiscal Year 2008 State Budget is constructed. Most of the measures require legislation, and several bills have already been introduced on the group's behalf.

One of the measures that has been suggested (but requires legislation) is a proposal to institute a tax on slips and moorings at marinas. This proposal may be an effort to add slip and mooring rentals to the list of what the state sales tax can apply to. However, it may also be a proposal to institute a separate (non service) tax on slips and moorings. Further, there may be a proposal to require cities and towns to assess local property tax on marinas, etc, and to enforce collection. As you know, this is not a common practice in Rhode Island. In the legislative session of 1993, legislation reversing many of the tax and economic development benefits granted the boat building industry in the state, became law. Within a few years that original legislation was reinstated, after the boat building industry suffered and the state lost revenue created through boat building and manufacturing jobs.

The Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce Coalition (the Central Rhode Island Chamber is a partner) believes that it would be shortsighted to institute the above proposals, as the underlying [entities] provide unique economic development in our state. We will be strongly opposing this legislation. We may need marina and boat owners to share their thoughts with the legislative committee if a hearing is scheduled. If you are willing to attend please let me know. We need to keep this industry as a vital component to the economic well being of the state. Please feel free to share your thoughts via email on this important issue. Thank you.

Tech Tips from Brewer Cove Haven Marina 02/21/2007
During the winter it is very important to check your boat frequently, especially during very wet winters such as this winter. Rain and Snow water have a way of finding its way into your bilge. Often the bilge gets so full that woodwork or machinery is damaged. You may want to install a "garboard" plug in the lowest point in the hull.
The plug can be removed during the winter and will permit the bilge water to drain out. We have installed dozens of these hull plugs and have prevented many boats from "sinking" on land.

RI State Law now requires that your boat be inspected for compliance with the no discharge law. Each boat will have a sticker issued by the inspection station. The inspection, which can be done by Brewer Cove Haven Marina, will determine whether you have the correct holding tank set up or if you have no capacity to discharge sewage into the waters of the state. Harbormasters will check for stickers and enforce the law accordingly. Give us a call if you want to have your boat inspected.

In recent years attention has been drawn to boating fatalities related to Carbon Monoxide poisoning on boats with engines or generators running. Most of the accidents involved boats with enclosures where the fumes were able to draft into the living spaces. CO as a gas is odor free and invisible. The solution today is easier than it has been because of the availability of CO Detectors. The new generation of Co detectors can be wired directly into the DC electrical system, which permits it to operate all of the time that the boat is in use. You can read about the issue in the December 2005 Practical Sailor.

As many of you have read recently, the shrink wrap recycling program that was started last year was a great success. Last year alone, over 46,000 pounds of shrink wrap was collected from Brewer Cove Haven Marina and other marinas around the state. All of it was recycled! The program works like this; if you have had your boat shrink-wrapped, either have the staff remove or if you wish to remove it yourself, you should purchase the recycle bags at the BCHM store, remove the plastic, take off all ties, doors and other non plastic debris, place in a recycle bag and bring to the north side of the building #2. It will be picked up on a twice a week schedule or as needed. DO NOT THROW SHRINK WRAP IN THE DUMPSTER!!!

Marina News 03/11/2008
We at Brewer Wickford Cove Marina have had a busy winter and are looking forward to a great 2008 summer season. The BWCM dredging project is completed for this winter. Digging is completed on the eastern half of the marina with a resulting draft of 10 feet available at mean low tide. We will finish the western half next winter. The eastern side of the service dock is now open for business with a 50'+ wide channel to the head of the stream next to the lift slip. We are calling it the "mega dock" because it offers over 300 feet of alongside docking.
We are planning to add a 200 amp three-phase electrical service to the mega dock so that larger yachts over 100 feet can visit the marina. Plans are also afoot to move the service/mega dock gangway from the end of the liftslip walkway to a new landing east of the slipway onto a new 96' dock connected to the inboard end of the service dock. New overhead lights will be installed soon at the head of each dock with some electrical supply improvements expected later this summer. The new high-tech septic system is in the approval process and will hopefully be installed this summer. We hope to see you at the marina as soon as the weather begins to warm up.
