About the Area

Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina is less than one half mile from Long Island Sound on the marsh-lined Branford River. Branford was first settled in 1638 by the Mattabesech Indians and was initially called 'Totoket.' It is believed that the name changed to Branford as a namesake to Brentford, England. As a highly accessible port, ships traded lumber, livestock and produce among other items from the West Indies. Branford still offers excellent protection during stormy weather in its secluded harbor.

Today, Branford has six historic districts that are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and more than 20 historic homes and properties are listed on the National Register.

Branford's recreational facilities include several town-maintained parks and beaches owned by private foundations, hiking trails along Lake Saltonstall and a stretch of the Shoreline Greenway Trail, and 20 miles (30 km) of coastline. Cruises of the Thimble Islands depart from the Stony Creek dock, and seal-watch cruises take place in March.

The Thimble Islands, just three miles east, offer close cruising, while Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina’s central location along the Connecticut coast, is just 65 miles from New York City. The marina is only 25 miles to Plum Gut, which is the gateway to some of the greatest cruising in the world including Shelter Island and Peconic Bay. Port Jefferson is also just a short trip across Long Island Sound.

Facilities: Our buildings are clean, tidy, well-lit and heated. Concrete floors provide an excellent working surface. We operate two 15-ton travel lifts; one 50-ton travel lift; a 20-ton hydraulic trailer; a 15-ton mobile crane; and a stationary mast crane. Our facilities are well-equipped to handle almost any type of yacht.

Mechanical: Our mechanical team is best known for its ability to decipher fuel system problems, trouble-shoot electrical system issues, and re-power engines. The longevity and experience of our crew allows us tackle virtually any service challenge that comes our way.

Refinishing: Managing our finish department is an industry veteran, who has over three decades of experience in the trade. Our reputation for fine finish work includes Awlgrip, varnish, and conventional paint application. In addition, this crew is well-versed in major fiberglass repair.

Electrical: Onsite ABYC certified marine electricians are capable of handling any electrical project or challenge.

Carpentry: Our carpentry shop is recognized to be among the best in the business. This department, also, is managed by another industry veteran. Whether tackling interiors, built-ins, transoms, trim, or plank-on-frame restoration work, our wood shop crew is meticulous. Additionally, our master carpenter has a special affinity for classic wooden yacht restoration.

Rigging: Our riggers service furlers, wind instruments, winches and all other components critical to sailboats. Off-season, we store masts indoors – away from the wear and tear of harsh winter weather.
