On June 9, 2008, Hydra Data Incorporated performed a survey of the channel after the completion of the dredging operation that occurred through April and May. As a result, we have adjusted the range markers to correspond to the deepest parts of the channel.
Mariners are advised to use the adjusted range markers located north of the channel. The markers are white diamonds with red edges. They are at a heading of 26 degrees magnetic. Careful measurements have been taken along this range, and the lowest depth encountered at low tide was 8 feet at low tide on June 27, 2008.

It is also important to note that there are ranges to mark the east and west edges of the channel. These markers are white and bright orange.Once outside of these markers, the depth of the water significantly drops.

Once inside the jetty, the deeper part of the channel widens, allowing navigators more room to maneuver without fear of running aground.
If you have any questions regarding navigation into the channel, or questions regarding the new markers, please contact Jeremy Maxwell at (860) 399-7906.
There have been reports of a low spot approximately 100 feet NNE of GC-3. If vessels remain in line with the range markers, this should cause no problems. We do ask that if anyone does run aground in the channel, that they report their GPS position to the dock master (krussell@byy.com) so we can pinpoint the problem spot.
