About the Area

Originally settled in 1635 as a village of Saybrook. In the early to mid-19th century, various portions of Saybrook broke off as separate towns, starting from Chester in 1836 to Old Saybrook in 1854. In 1947, the town of Saybrook changed its name to "Deep River", matching the name of the town center village.

The town of Deep River is a compact 14 square miles, and centrally located in the state's largest vacation area, where one third of the area is occupied by state forest today. This quaint area combines New England small town charm with a Main Street that draws shoppers and boaters from many surrounding towns. Deep River offers a diverse retail center, unique restaurants, and wonderful hiking trails through rich nature preserves.

Deep River Events

The Deep River Ancient Muster (DRAM) is an annual event, held the third weekend in July every year. Several thousand spectators travel to Deep River to watch a celebration of 70 early American fife and drum corps (more than 1500 marchers).

July Summer picnics and concerts, sponsored by the Deep River Park & Recreation.

Deep River Marina is also one of the stops on the "Marina Dinner Train" offered, once a summer by the Essex Steam Train. The dinner train picks up and drops off visitors at the marina. Sign up with friends or make it a trip to meet other families who enjoy boating on the Connecticut River.
