Hamburg Cove

Hamburg Cove is part of the Eight Mile River which flows southward from Colchester and downstream into the Connecticut River. This popular hangout spot is ideal for a day of relaxation and recreation. Sail by the interesting homes that dot the shoreline or check out the impressive yachts and sailboats at the local yacht clubs. The cove is also a prime spot to kayak, paddleboard, and sail, there are plenty of local businesses that offer rentals.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat

Climb aboard a steam locomotive with a vintage coach for a fun and fascinating journey on the Essex Steam Train, which begins at the historic 1892 Essex Station and traverses 12 miles of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley. Experience the raw beauty of the tidal wetlands, coves, and preserves while observing many species of native wildlife during this immersive on-board eco excursion. The Becky Thatcher riverboat offers cruises along the Connecticut River with multiple decks for observing the inlets, marshes, and rocky shoreline. A fantastic choice for a family-friendly outing.

Fenwick Golf Course

Treat yourself to a round or two at Connecticut’s oldest golf course and you’ll be joining in a rich tradition shared by generations of New England golfers. The first nine holes at Fenwick were completed in the late 19th century and feature beautiful landscapes, berms, small greens, wide hole corridors and firm fairways and greens. Tee times can be booked online.

Liv’s Oyster Bar

This intimate dinner spot is an exceptional one to savor for special occasions with family and friends. Dine in the main room, at the bar, or on the patio while enjoying simple, focused dishes that rely on fresh local seafood and seasonal ingredients. Sample the best of the sea from Liv’s exquisite raw bar, savor a bowl of parsnip soup with smoked mussels, or enjoy a crisp salad before digging into one of many hearty, flavorful entrees. White wine and butter roasted cod, pan seared duck breast, and sesame crusted tuna, and other seasonal selections are all a part of this excellent and memorable menu.

The Essex Restaurant

This award-winning, upscale eatery in the heart of Essex serves avant garde American cuisine infused with the perfect balance of classic New England charm and modern elegance. Drawing from the rich heritage of the Connecticut River Valley, the menu here prioritizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients from land and sea and offers the option of 5 and 7-course tasting menus for a chef-curated dining experience. Sample steak frites with toffee glaze, seared miso sablefish, blue fin tuna tartare, and other rotating specialty items like escargot and osetra gold caviar. Reservations are recommended.
