Located between the forks of eastern Long Island, Greenport is an ideal visiting spot for transients or starting point for adventures afloat. Greenport is the gateway to the Peconic estuary, a series of beautiful and navigable bays for day sailing, gunk holing, and exploring, but it serves an ideal launching pad for offshore fishing.

Led by a manager who apprenticed as a wooden boat builder early in his career, and who draws on his experience working on everything from kayaks to America’s Cup contenders. The yard is considered the ‘place to go’ for just about any type of service, including engine and bow thruster installations, carpentry work, keel modifications, and paint finishes.

About the Area

Greenport was first settled in 1682. The village was previously called Winter Harbor, Stirling, and Green Hill and was incorporated in 1838. Since the 18th century, Greenport has been a working seaport, boasting trades in the whaling industry and shipbuilding. Since 1844, the village has also been the eastern terminal station on the North Fork for the Long Island Railroad. Many of Greenport’s older structures can be appreciated while visiting the Greenport Village Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Today, there are only a handful of commercial fishing vessels operating out of Greenport, but the tourism industry and recreational boating have grown substantially. By land, Greenport Yacht Yard is only a mile from the village's shopping district and Greenport Maritime Museum. Historic downtown Greenport features a nautical village setting, historical museums, boutique shopping, and both fine and casual dining. Old fashioned general stores, sidewalk cafes, and eateries featuring local seafood set the mood. Also showcased downtown is a beautiful 1920s carousel. All this surrounded by miles of pristine beaches and 17 wineries offering tours and tastings! By sea, Greenport Yacht Yard is in the midst of some of the world’s greatest cruising areas and adjacent to Long Island's famous wine vineyards and agricultural country, making it an ideal home port, as well as a favorite destination for traveling yachtsmen. Cruising options within reach include Sag Harbor featuring quaint architecture, fine restaurants, and walking tours—and Shelter Island, featuring a tranquil residential community, a 200 acre nature preserve, and many beautiful anchorages. Fishing opportunities are abundant locally, as well as nearby, off Montauk, which is known worldwide as a premier sport fishing destination. Greenport is also the location to enjoy the world famous Peconic Bay scallops, Greenport oysters, along with micro-brewed beers from Greenport Harbor Brewery. Whether visiting Greenport for its quiet and protected port, or to enjoy some of the world's greatest cruising grounds, you will find the same commitment to excellent service as any of Safe Harbor's nationwide locations.

Winter Storage

With almost twenty acres of accommodation between Safe Harbor’s Stirling Harbor Marina and Greenport Yacht Yard, there are plenty of storage options for your vessel, whether requiring indoor, outdoor or wet storage. Indoor boats are stored in a moderately heated environment; outdoor boats are framed and covered; and wet stored boats are monitored closely. In addition, a rig shop with padded racks provides secure mast storage, away from the effects of bitter winter weather.

All boats are handled with the greatest of care. Covers and stands are inspected throughout the winter, while work orders for repairs, repowers, refits, and refinish work are addressed on schedule, in anticipation of meeting spring launch schedules.

Greenport’s Brewer Service Yard is a member of:

  • ABBRA—American Boat Builders & Repairers Association
  • ABYC—American Boat & Yacht Council

With approximately nine acres of land and 23,000 sq. ft. of indoor storage space, we maintain a fleet of 400 yachts, servicing the North Fork and South Fork, as well as Sag Harbor and East Hampton. We have a good reputation; offer complete mechanical, electrical, rigging, carpentry, finish, and fiberglass service; and are considered “the place to go” for engine and bow thruster installations, carpentry work, keel modifications, and paint work. Though well known for our skilled carpenters and diesel mechanics, we consider our strength to be our ability to handle all types of jobs. Also, as one of Long Island’s largest sailboat rigging departments, we can evaluate, repair, replace and modify any of your rigging needs. In-house swaging capability, line splicing and wheel leathering services are available.

With a 70-ton travel lift, a 25-ton remote control lift, a 20-ton hydraulic trailer, a roll-off trailer, a hydraulic mast hoist, and a mobile manlift, we are well equipped to handle the needs of almost any yacht. Our buildings are meticulously maintained and include an insulated, fire-protected work/storage shed; a well lit, state-of-the-art rig shop; and a heated, fully ventilated work bay for fiberglass, paint, and varnish application. We also manage a well-stocked parts room, which supports our service staff and allows our team to operate with the greatest degree of efficiency.

Our full-time fully certified mechanics service running gear, upgrade sanitation systems, update electrical systems, repower engines, and replace fuel systems, among other services. This crew’s exceptional skill has earned our yard the reputation of being “the place to go”, especially for engine and bow thruster installations. To keep sharp and up-to-date, our crew also attends annual Brewer-sponsored seminars, and participates in all in-house training opportunities. Our chief mechanic is a certified ABYC electrician.

Our finish department can handle a full complement of services, from structural fiberglass and cosmetic gelcoat repair, to yacht-quality paint and varnish application. Our crew is also licensed to apply bottom paint (considered a pesticide in NY) and is well versed in buffing and waxing hulls and superstructures.

Our electrical team is ABYC certified and capable of installing and servicing all your electronic needs from inverters, to battery banks, to complete electronics packages.

We have a very skilled, experienced carpentry department and truly welcome any woodworking challenge!

Our work includes building custom hatches, installing teak and holly cabin soles, refitting toe rails, and, uniquely, building kayaks and ice boats on occasion. Our carpentry department draws inspiration and experience from our General Manager, who began his career apprenticing as a wooden boat builder and has spent many years working on boats ranging from kayaks to America’s Cup contenders.

Seasoned sailors, passionate about their sport, staff our rigging department. Our crew not only offers basic services such as stepping and usnstepping masts, installing furling units, servicing winches, and modifying running rigging, but also offers complete mast surveys. Our rigging shop and mast storage shed is state of the art.

Whether repairing a damaged keel, specing a new sailboat rig, modifying an interior, or expertly installing an engine, we provide top-quality service in every department. To learn more about what we have to offer, please call us or drop in to ask for a tour of our facilities.
