The Lost Bungalows of Great Misery Island

These historical recreation grounds date back to the time of the Mosconomet Indians and still contain traces of early 20th century leisure-seekers and vacationers. The island’s name originates from the “three days of misery” a stranded sea captain spent there during a terrible winter storm in 1620s–but it’s safe to say that today’s visitors have a much more enjoyable experience exploring the relics of the past, hiking through meadows and forests, and combing the rocky shores.

Salem Witch Museum

Learn more about one of the most notorious trials in American history with a fascinating visit to the Salem Witch Museum. Through immersive presentations, visitors to the museum can trace the shocking events of 1692 that led to the imprisonment of 150-200 people for the practice of witchcraft. Many innocent victims were subsequently put to death for their alleged crimes, and the trials remain a shocking remnant of the Puritan “witch panic” that was widespread at the time of the early American colonists. Same day tickets may be purchased online prior to your visit.

House of 7 Gables

Widely remembered as the setting for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel, the House of Seven Gables is a designated National Historic Landmark and one of America’s most beloved historical homes. The house, situated on Salem Harbor, was built in 1668 by a merchant ship owner and his wife. Visitors can take guided tours of the interior of the home, obtain ground passes to explore the surroundings, and more.

Derby Wharf Park

The construction of the 2,045-foot historic wharf that extends over Salem Harbor began in 1762 and was finally completed in 1806. Considered a Salem Maritime Historic site, the wharf once contained over 20 structures, whose archeological remains provide important clues as to what life was like on the harbor centuries ago. It is one of four historic wharfs on the Salem Harbor and is fascinating to learn about and explore.

Mercy Tavern

This cozy Salem gastropub is known for its New England comfort food, specialty cocktails, and rotating line-up of live entertainment. Only a stone’s throw away from the marina, the tavern’s menu prioritizes locally sourced and sustainably produced ingredients and features favorites like nachos, clam chowder, fish and chips, burgers, and house fried ribs. The cocktail offerings are playful and inventive–the perfect way to celebrate after a long day on the water.
